Educators provide a vital link in the
Plant for the Planet! campaign. Whether you teach in
a classroom, provide programs at a botanic garden or
zoo, or do outreach in your local community, Plant for
the Planet! has resources for you.
Currently,
you can download and print A
Plant Conservation Checklist for Gardeners
(338K PDF) for use in course materials or local distribution.
A Plant Conservation Checklist for Gardeners
can be a useful tool in a variety of education programs.
Here are just a few ideas for putting it to work for
you:
- Incorporate the brochure into existing courses your
institution offers for home gardeners. Recommend Plant:
The Ultimate Visual Reference to Plants and Flowers
of the World as an excellent source for more
detailed information on home gardening and plant conservation.
- Create an information station about plant conservation
one weekend a month in your garden, zoo or education
site. Educators can answer home gardening questions,
provide information about plant conservation issues
and distribute the Checklist.
- Feature the brochure on your website with a link
to the downloadable PDF at http://www.plantfortheplanet.org/brochure.pdf.
- Create a “discovery cart,” staffed by
an educator, with examples of rare or threatened plants
so that visitors can get up close and personal. Distribute
the Checklist as part of the program.
- Distribute the Checklist as a thank you to volunteers at your living institution.
- Use the Checklist as part of your offerings
to celebrate Plant Conservation Day.
- Set up a plant conservation information booth at
your institution’s annual plant sale or similar
fundraiser, and distribute the brochure to plant purchasers.
